The Paradox

08-16-2026

The biggest paradox of the Fermi Paradox is that there is no paradox. It’s mostly just pride and arrogance. Let me explain…

“Oh, we’ve been studying the Universe, and it looks like the building blocks for life are very common and conditions to support it can be found on many many places, and yet… we’ve been searching soooo hard and haven’t found any life yet anywhere. Where is everybody? Oh, it’s such a paradox! Oh, my pearls!”

STFU

You have 3 or 4 little robots on the next planet right over, that don’t even have particularly good instruments, they just roll around at less than 1 mile per hour, pick up a rock, look at it, and keep moving, right? You have also been listening for radio signals for about, what, 70 years? Most of the time having no idea what you were listening to. You’ve been finding planets outside the Solar System for the last 20 years, just by detecting their shadow, not even seeing them.

Oh, yeah, and a couple of probes that have been flying away for 50 years and are barely in the last 5 or so, coming out the Solar System, that you just hurled away on a random direction, with a message that… supposedly, aliens are going to be able to understand because… you had Carl Sagan write it?

But the Universe is VAST, I mean, unfathomably vast, and weird.

So that’s my point, arrogance. What makes you think that we’ve even scratched the very microscopic tip of the surface of understanding, mapping, and describing the Universe. We’ve looked, superficially, at something like 1% of our own galaxy, and there could be as many as 2 trillion galaxies in the observable Universe. What makes you think that when you stumble upon life you are even going to be able to understand what it is?

In case it’s not clear, no, I’m not arguing for pessimism, but for patience.

The question of whether there is life elsewhere in the Universe or not is probably the most important question for humanity to answer, IMHO, and we will never have proof that there isn’t, only if there is.

So don’t stop looking, don’t stop exploring.
