Sloppify the Web!

A while ago —I should say that it was when I was much deeper in the small-web rabbit hole than I am right now (although I can feel it slowly creeping back on me)—, I had this idea that I haven’t really followed through on, but still find intriguing.

You know about the Dead Internet Theory, right? The original post goes pretty deep into conspiracy thoery territory (still a pretty interesting read if you are into such things), but even without the tinfoil hat, we can all see it, right? The web is quickly filling up with content made by bots and AI. Depending on how you look at it, if you measure by data moving around, most of the traffic is already automated bots crawling websites and carrying data from one place to another, and this has been true for some time now; but also if you look at content, by some metrics, already most blogs, social media posts, marketing campaigns, videos and audio are AI generated content (presumably) prompted by a human, but soon probably even the prompting will just be automated processes that lead a whole campaign, while the human only did a tiny bit of input at some point.

The LLM and image generation models are still getting more and more powerful but there’s already a diminishing return curve showing and why? Because they’re running out of original data to digest for the new models. So they have tried to tweak the algorithms to squeeze more juice out of the available data and have even resorted to what can only be called an atrocity if you are the kind person who likes books, to find new data, but even that is limited.

And still they keep pushing the AI down your throat as if it was an existential need that Big-AI keeps growing until it digests everything, not just the data, but the entire Internet, the Economy, and your whole life…

Look, I’m not against the existence of AI (or what we’ve been calling AI for the past 4 years… it’s still debatable whether it deserves the name or not). I’ve used it to learn programming, languages, research any topic that I’m curious about, even bounce random ideas that may or may not have later been the seed to a couple blog posts and other projects. I even used an agent to help migrate this blog from static HTML to PHP for the comments functionality, and to add a little automation and SEO. It is, objectively, a fascinating and incredibly powerful technology.

Aside... Sometimmes I wish I was more radically against AI and say "No, I will never touch that thing!" There is something to admire about it, I don't know...

I'm not as radical as good ol' Luke, but I still want the Internet to serve the purpose it was created for: to foster communication between people, not to funnel endless amounts of data and cash into the pockets of a few overlords, along with your privacy and your sanity.

So why "sloppify the web", you ask? Well, it’s a little bit of malicious compliance, we might say; or like that protest method made famous by Japanese workers, where instead of stopping work when they strike, they work harder, so the company has overproduction and they don’t know what to do with all the product.

The point is, if they’re shoving AI down our throats like they want us to use it for everything, well, give them what they want: go forth and fill the servers with AI images, AI text, AI videos, AI podcasts and AI music to your heart’s content until the models collapse (perhaps along with the AI companies themselves… and possibly the economy too, that’s a risk, I guess); another reason that it would accelerate the demise of some of the Big-AI companies is because they are still subsidizing the expense to encourage adoption, that's why there's an AI financial bubble that has been just about to pop for the past year or so... anyway, so it would also be something similar to a "bank run". Then we will rebuild the Free Web from the ashes.

It’s just an idea, don’t blame me if it works too well. But yeah, think about it…
